Antiques dealer Thomasina Bateman is writing a publication on the barrows of England and is documenting her discoveries of treasures inside. When an intriguing letter summons her to the tiny town of Bewlay hidden within the countryside in the far distance, she travels by train and her assistant to leave for a few days behind.
The mysterious figure who called her to rescue her is not there upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses entry to her barrow. Many people fear the woman that travels by herself. wears trousers.
